Even though the kit is fairly brainless to put together, he somehow assembled it with a severe twist. He made the finished product straight with liberal use of filler. This made the boat heavier and less efficiently shaped. I would think the result would have been serviceable, but Tom and John didn't like the idea of rowing a defective boat all the way across the Atlantic so they opted to build a new one.
