I have a Civic as well and carry two sea kayaks easily. I have a 48 inch crossbar
and the secret is to attach the outer half of the cradle (in my case the older Thule
sea kayak cradle) on the part of the bar that extends outboard of the tower.
You could put a longer bar on if you need - just pad the ends so that you don't hurt
your head when you bang it.

There are a couple of brands that work with sea kayaks. Thule makes one.
