I had the long Yakima bars on my old Honda (before I sold it to get 
the Khatsalano). The trick is to reach out and grab the bar before 
you get out. Eventually, you'll get in the habit of missing the bar. 
And don't forget to remind people riding in your car to watch their 
heads. You don't want to know how many people smacked their heads on 
the bars in my car.

I've also seen people stick tennis balls on the bar ends. Works but 
looks silly. Then again, 48" bars look silly too.
