A lot of the Everglades paddling is actually in the mangroves and not the swamps so there are no gators. A very rare croc is possible, but you will usually see manatees and porpoise. The "chickees" are useful in the freshwater areas, and I'm sure that gator took off like a rocket when he heard the boat. I paddle a canal in the Glades that is loaded with huge gators. There's one every 30 yards or so and they continuously splash off the bank as you paddle by. They are very shy, but you don't want to miss your roll! The Glades are relatively low to normal at the moment cya *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s).
