Just heard about a brand new book.

Sea Kayaking Safety and Rescue
by John Lull

(sells for ~15$ in online bookstores).

Has anybody checked it out and could give us a first subjective
opinion?

I bought Sea Kayak Rescue: The Definitive Guide to Modern
Reentry and Recovery Techniques by Roger Schumann and Jan
Shriner a couple of months ago, after a very positive review posted
on paddlewise. I like it a lot and highly recommend it.
Now, barely 5 month later there is another book entirely dedicated
to this topic. Redundancy or additional wisdom?

Cheers

PW,

John Lull's new book is great. IMNSHO every serious seakayaker should own
this book. And Deep Trouble. A GREAT combo!

ACA Instructor Trainer Educator and Tsunami Ranger John not only gives us a
feel for the proper attitude we should have about our sport but an easy to
follow game plan to get the skills. And the skills......detailed and again
easy to understand and learn. He covers many subjects of supreme interest
to the sea boater. These books, cover to cover, combined with a number of
instructional sessions with a good coach and anyone who is serious about sea
cruisin' should be well on their way.

I think Roger and Jan's book is great as well, though focused mainly on
rescue technique. John shows us a much broader picture of sea kayaking. He
does a pretty sweet job of covering most of the dealings we have with Mom
Nature's finest wonder. The ocean.

Yes, John Lull's book, "Sea Kayaking Safety and Rescue" is very good. I
just bought it and I'm about half way finished. Well written and lots of
good photos. The following is a list of the chapter titles to give you an
idea of what is in the book.

Building a Safety Foundation

Sea-Kayaking Domains

Equipment Selection and Use

Assisted Deep-Water Rescues

Self-Rescues

Rescues in Surf and Ocean Rock Gardens

The Eskimo Roll

Backup Strategies

Towing

Weather and Sea Conditions

Tides and Currents

Dealing with Boat Traffic

Safety in Surf and Ocean Rock Gardens

Risk Assessment

Group Safety Through Teamwork

Training

I do not have "Sea Kayak Rescue" by Roger Schumann and Jan Shriner yet so I
can't make a comparison. I've attended some of Roger's classes at the West
Coast Sea Kayak Symposium and can say he is an excellent instructor.

As Steve Scherrer mentioned, the other safety book is "Deep Trouble" by Matt
Broze and George Gronseth. I've read this book numerous times over the
years and it definately should be required reading for anyone that goes sea
kayaking. This book has many true stories of sea kayaking accidents, some
fatal and some near fatal.
