I use an Otter box for my digital camera. It is small and fits into my deck
bag, and is lined with foam so it is easy on the camera.
http://www.otterbox.com/technology.html They make them in a number of
different sizes that will fit your camera. They are definitely waterproof.
I also own a pelican case, but it is much bigger and bulkier than my
otterbox. I also own an otter box for my PDA, I take my PDA so I can use
tide tool (I am a hopeless electronic junky).

Another suggestion would be to try a waterproof case that allows you to take
a picture through the case. I am considering this one for my Sea Kayaking
and rafting trips.
http://www.ewa-marine.de/English/e-start-photo.htm They make the housing
for a number of different camera models. By the way if anyone has used this
model I would appreciate hearing about your experience. -- MZ

Mary,

I use something very similar, don't remember the brand name but I had to
order it from a company in Florida if that helps.

Works great except for one very annoying problem. Water drops on the optical
plastic make for some fuzzy photos. I first used mine on a 13 1/2 NM open
ocean crossing to the Channel Islands in CA. Nobody in the group was able to
keep from getting water drops on most of their photos.

Even trying to keep a dry cloth in a PFD pocket doesn't work when your hands
keep getting splashed from waves and swells.

Still it is better than nothing, and will also allow you to keep your camera
handy so it can be used.

Consider other options. Instead of a box for my SLR, several years ago I
bought a soft, padded, camera case (a Lowe Elite) narrow enough to fit into
the cockpit between my knees, and then made a drybag-type lining for it. The
lining velcroes in place and has additional velcro on the inside so I can
use the partitions that came with the bag. The bag is not totally
waterproof, but amazingly floats right side up with the mouth out of the
water even with a camera and two or three lenses in it. It also converts
into a fanny pack.

The downside of having the bag between my knees is that it makes it harder
to get into and out of the kayak, so I usually just use my Nikonos V
underwater camera, which hangs around my neck under my PFD. With the Nikonos
focus and exposure preset, I can usually get off a shot in 15-20 seconds. It
is not as versatile as the SLR, however.
