G'Day Rick and Paddlewise,
Surfers here (Sydney) measure a wave from the mean level of the sea to
the height of the back of the wave. Is it the same for kayaking? It would be
useful to quote wavelength along with wave height. For example think of the
difference between coping with a wave 2 meters high and 300 metre wavelength
(swell?)compared to a wave that was 2 meter high with a 3 metre wavelength
(sea? clapotis?).

All the best, PeterO

Here in Tasmania the BOM have what is called a wave rider. It measures the
peak hight of the waves and the time in between each peak. It is set up on
the Northwest Coast in Bass Straight and they get some scary readings from
it. Bass Straight can be a very unforgiving stretch of water.

Cheers
