Jolie, FWIW, this is my opinion having logged at least 100,000 commercial air miles per year for the last 5 years... If you like your paddle and want to keep it, don't do this. The ONLY way to safely check your paddle through is in a hard-shell check-thru style golf case or other hard-shell luggage that it will fit into, with your gear and clothing stuffed around it to keep it from slopping around. Still yet, if you can rent what you want at the other end that's the best bet. Choice #2 is shipping it to yourself. I might also add that in all those miles I have not once ever lost a piece of luggage or filed any claim for damage. I have, however, witnessed plenty of baggage handling antics. I use hard-shell luggage.
