 Marilyn,
Here's a recipe from "Sandykayak's Kookbook".
Drink this and you will be able to paddle the surf at Cayo Costa and through
the "Soldiers" of Boca Grande cut.
(Any response to this email from Sandy will elicit publication of the photo
on the front page of her cookbook.)
Cayo costa cocktail

a firecracker of a drink
It's a sort of Planter's Punch....grapefruit juice and pineapple juice in
roughly equal portions, some orange juice, generous squish of limes,
grenadine (makes it pink and I guess it adds sweetener and perhaps a bit of
flaVor, if you don't have...use pink grapefruit juice). Add sugar or liquid
sweetener, if desired. Add rum....preferably 150+ proof!!!

paddled out from the boat dock and around to the mangrove channel. But
after reaching the beach and portaging over to the water, I found the surf
too high to let me launch and had to retrace my route back. I'm planning to

Well, seriously, I never drink and drive at the same time.

I didn't make it through the Boca Grande Cut the time I tried. The water
was quite choppy and I was in a 12 foot sit-on-top.
Under some conditions, when the wind and waves oppose each other, the waves
stand up as straight as soldiers. (Someone correct me, if I have this story
wrong.)

One of the purposes of buying a touring kayak is so I can make it from Pine
Island (connected to the mainland) to Cayo Costa. It's a lovely island. I
hope some of my friends have enough vacation time saved to paddle over with
me soon.

P.S. Boca Grande is where the Bushes vacation.

My family and i are getting ready for our annual trek to Cayo Costa. My
girlfriend and I take our six children camping for a week as our big Florida
vacation because we were angry as teens that all our friends got to go to
Florida for spring break and we couldn't afford it. ;) I'll take your
recipe with us, thanks! ...and of course my kayak...last year I got ALMOST
all the way around the island on a day trip, but the winds were very high
all week. I'm hoping for a better chance this year to do the whole
circumnavigation. It's a fun place. I strongly recommend it, but don't
tell too many people!

Tori..
who is counting the days till CayoCosta, and then back to counting for
Delmarva again....

<<<<Add rum....preferably 150+ proof!!!>>

How was I supposed to know it was 150-proof?

Let's just say that a good time was had by all....well, maybe the guy who fell off the porch won't agree. He now refuses to go on a trip if I threaten to make a rum punch!

But Tina and paddling pal Kathy (and some of the other Homeless Paddlers can attest to my margaritas in the hot tub...or was it champagne?

better take the "fifth" here :)

The paddle over to Cabbage Creek is quite easy - the Inn has a fabulous restaurant. Jimmy Buffet's Hamburgers in Paradise (???) was based on their burger.

do a google search on it..it's quite historical...there's also a watch tower you can climb for a cool view.
