My old cat, who will not come in the house ever, loves to sleep in my overturned rec kayak. One day I was loading it onto the roof to go fishing when that fat old cat came spilling out of it just as I hoisted it up about shoulder high. He looks like a raccoon so I jumped back dropping the boat almost squishing him in the process. My 110 lb Lab likes to go out in the rec boat. Its interesting getting him back into it when he jumps out for reasons only retrievers understand and you are quite far from land. He always puts a mean list into the boat making it interesting to get where you are going. Has anyone looked into taking a few hundred plastic pink flamingos and recycling them into a touring boat? My daughter would love to paddle it in her Barbie PFD. Maybe Werner would donate a custom pink paddle? I think winter is getting to me. Time for a drink. I better wait 12 minutes until its after noon. My dog is with me so I am not drinking alone. I love a good rationalization. Someone asked if cats are good paddling companions. Sort of. About 10 years ago I was paddling on the flood current up the Hudson just slightly north of the city across from Yonkers. Stopped to take a break to wait for the current to turn to ebbe to favor my return back to northern Manhattan. As I daydreamed on a small beach I saw a canoe heading southward with a lone paddler. He was shirtless, PFDless, etc.; an old fellow about 70 or so I would guess. He spotted me and turned toward the beach I was on. As the bow of his canoe hit the sandy beach, he walked toward the front of the canoe with a leash in his hand. On the other end was a cat. He lifted the cat on to dry land before pulling his boat up further on the beach. I looked over at the cat. It seemed to be fidgedy, going from place to place, to a boulder and then to a log. The cat didn't seem very happy. I took a closer look and realized the cat was soaking wet. I remarked to the canoeist, "Hey, your cat is wet!" And there in lies the tale. Seems he always paddled with the cat. To make certain nothing happened to the cat he had it tethered. On this particular trip, the fellow didn't notice that the cat had fallen overboard. He wasn't certain how long he had, in effect, been trawling cat! When he realized this, he pulled the poor thing in. The experience acccounts for the strange behavior of the cat! ralph diaz-- ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Ralph Diaz . . . One late summer I went on a week long self-contained wilderness blueberry hunt on Superior with the Great McCann and Morrigaine the Cat. (Sorry Dave, not you. I'm talking about your cousin Janet who is the brains of your clan.) I had a terrifc time. So did Morrigaine, who enjoyed hiking about on the beaches and checking out the brush. The Great McCann was a true blueberry daemon sneaking into heaven, who mowed through blueberry fields for hours at a time, only stopping when she could hold no more, laying in the bushes, making bleating urping noises. Boats and blueberries and cats: of such are great adventures made. Excellent! She looks very comfortable and at ease. And safe, with her pfd on!
