Hi UK, An interesting topic. Are you paddling a single? Are doubles in your group? What types of kayak are you all paddling? As Craig has mentioned one of the sources of course is Lindemann, but there is also Ed Gillett who paddled a hardshell double from California to Hawaii back in the early 80s. He has a brief outline of his experiences on the net. Dial his name into a search engine. There is also the experience of Eric Stiller and companion in their Quattro double in the partial circumnavigation of Australia, also in the 80s. They paddled and sailed across the Gulf of Carpentaria [ Northern Australia ] and I think Eric's description of this multiday crossing is compulsory reading for anyone planning such a trip. His book is Keep Australia on Your Left, and is in print. To my mind there is quite a difference between resting at sea, and actually sleeping at sea. In terms of safety, gear, training [ actually doing it ] etc. I have modified and equipped and used my boat for staying at sea, but all this effort is designed around the type [ a Klepper ] and my experiences in this regard may not translate across to folks with other types of boat, or for doubles.
