Steve: I keep my pump between my seat and the hull. It fits in there pretty
tightly, but not tight enough as I found out. I am on my way to the store to
buy more bungie cord to tether to the seat ;-)
PT: It seems a good idea to secure everything stored inside the cockpit.
When a boat is flooded in rough water after a wet exit, the cockpit becomes
a washing machine tub. Any gear not tied down, and even some that is, can be
lost.
Steve: ...remember, I've never had a deepwater capsize that wasn't something
planned for practice.
PT: Just a silly trivial point, but isn't it funny how, starting maybe with
Derek Hutchinson, rescues are described as "deepwater". What other kind is
there? If you are in shallow water, you get out and walk. Who needs a
shallow water rescue?
Steve: ...there were these 6-8 foot waves between us. My thinking now is
that it is best to buddy up in groups of three rather
than two.
PT: Sounds good. Groups of sea kayakers seem to spread out easily. If you
can organize them into mutual support groups of three you are doing well.

to Steven:

I have seen a kayak with a special deckreces to accept flares. It should not
be to difficult to make such a special reces for a handpump. (at least in a
polyester kayak.) The normal bungees that hold your chart case should also
hold this pump.

to Nick:
Is it not dangerous to get entangled in a paddleleash?

There are cases where any leash can be dangerous. However, in
some cases the risk of not leashing is greater. I wouldn't
use a leash in surf, where the paddle can become a danger
by trashing you while the wave trashes you, you kayak and
the paddle. However, a leash can keep the paddle attached
to the kayak in most circumstances and this may have helped
Steve.

I don't like most commercial leashes because they don't release
easily (or at all with some brands). I have made my own and
they have a quick release at both the paddle shaft and kayak
ends. I've put some details on my web site:

I think another point can be taken from this experience. The sea loves
to remove poorly secured things from your deck. That is why I try to
keep very little on my deck or ensure it is tethered. I keep my pump
squeezed between my seat and the side of the kayak.

(Great post Steve!). Securing one's hand held pump isn't that difficult
to do but, if you want to spend money and be a true techno-weenie,
Natural West Coat Adventure Gear had a great Cordura sleeve that
velcroes the length of the pump. It has a clip for a tether line, and
built in flotation so the pump cant sink either. Mine's bright red to
match my PFD - stylin' bro! Color coordination and lots of gear makes
for a safer paddler, right? Anyway, my hand pump is a backup to my
footpump and/or for helping pump out another boat alongside me, etc.

You can check out the Company at:

No picture on the site yet, but contact info there. It was about $10.00
Canadian. A neat little product from Canada, worth its price in gold (or
silver in the USA!). I have no financial intrest in this company.

Doug,

Great looking item, I sent them an email to get prices since they don't have
them listed. My grey pump with a small red floatation color was not easy to
see in the swells and whitecaps. And although my pump was kept wedged
between my seat and hull, the reason I had not teathered it was because I
hadn't yet found color coordinated bungee cord.
