My wife the ENT doctor told me that a cold water ear rinsing (caloric)
causes dizziness because it stimulates the balance mechanism in the ear.
Every normal person will respond this way. She also threw in the tasty tidbit
that it is a way physicians test for brain activity in comatose patients. She
is a weird chick, but I love her. She is also the financial backing for this
hobby. She is also staring hard at me now.

I experience this cold water dizziness. As far as I know, when the
temperature in ONE ear drops, the "calibration" of your balance
mechanism is off. The same happens to me when a cold wind blows in one
ear, although not nearly as severe as when I roll in cold water. It
happens only in cold water: In a swimming pool I once entered a rolling
contest, did 50 rolls in 5 minutes and wasn't dizzy at all.

The serious solution is wearing earplugs or a scullcap. Medicin won't
work.

Something that also might work: When you perform a roll, typically just
one ear gets filled with water. Immediately perform a roll on the other
side, so the temperature in both ears is the same. I never tried this,
but theoretically it should work. If anyone wants to try, I'd like to
know the result.

Niels.
