My first question would be does it have aluminum poles. It is hard to tell
from the photo, but they look like fiberglass. Personally, I would not buy
a tent with fiberglass pole unless I could get replacement aluminum ones. I
use my tents a lot and fiberglass does not hold up in the wind. -- MZ

Good point. I recall that from posts last year but totally forget to look it on this tent. The other tent on my original post does have aluminum, though.

BTW, I saw my "follow up" post come through, but not the original that I sent maybe 10-15 minutes prior to the follow-up. Did it make it? It had the meat of the inquiry in it.

Rick, I have a 8.5 pound north face tent. I also have a 4 pound sierra
designs. The sierra designs clip flashlight usually goes on a trip because it
is light and I've got enough freeboard left over for food and water, photo
gear, cheap novels, etc. I also have full length vestibules on the tents
which keeps water out in a blow. I saw a more open design on the kelty which
may, or may not.

Before you commit 90 bucks plus tax and shipping, pick up this months copy of
Backpacker magazine. They have far better reviews of outdoor gear than any
magazine I know of. You can buy a really good, lightweight 3 season tent for
close to that price.

Rick-

It's a bit late in the session for the tent sales but here's a few
good places to look for deals. I've bought and returned from both
fine. You should be able to find a well made tent in your budget.

If you're an REI member, you can sometimes find screaming deals on
tents. Very often, they'll have one on clearance (usually at a monthly
clearance sale) that may be a cosmetic blem, missing a pole (cheap to
replace!), or be missing a strategic snap, buckle, or snap (also cheap
fixes). They'll usually let you erect the tent in the store, and you
can find out what is missing or needs fixin'.

I bought a $200+ Jansport Rongbuk Hotel 3+ person tent at the REI in
Spokane, WA for $88. It had all "male" snaps on the tabs where the
vestibule of the fly attached to the tent, and was missing one of two
upper vent panels (I can live with that) A drill, 5 minutes, and 2
snaps later, and it was as good as new. This tent also has a very
strange "sphincter" door on one end--can anybody tell me what this is
for?! (yes, their own marketing literature calls it the sphincter.)

The Kifaru Tipi or BD Megamid both look very intriguing, too. The
thought of a tiny woodstove in the tent (fed with small sticks and
twigs) rather than a big fire outside (logs) is also appealing. I grew
up in a family where camping meant packing-in on horseback. The
standard wood stove in a wall tent is just about unbeatable for
comfort, but hard to pack in a kayak!

Is this model a 4 season tent? I had a North face tent with a Sphincter
opening only they called it a tunnel. It was a useful for mountaineering
tent because you could set up the stove outsite and still be covered by the
tunnel. The snow was less likely to get in the tunnel than opening a
regular door. They also used the tunnel in snowy conditions, the thought
being you would have a transition before you entered the tent. It also came
in handy in snow if you set tents next to each other so you could crawl in
the tunnel from one tent to the next. I am not sure if what you are
describing is the same set-up. I didn't use it much and it added weight. --

I haven't met anyone who's used the Nightscape, though it sounds like fun. Rick, this would be OK for car camping, but you might want something smaller and lighter if you are going to kayak camp.

For Florida camping,I prefer tents with peaked canopies and doors/windows on all four sides - scratch the Nightscape. However, if you're going to be in windy situations, the "eaves" are perfect wind-ripping spots.

FLASH! thru google I got this:
http://www.johnsonoutdoors.com/camping/eureka/eureka2002/nightxt.html

The Nightscape 2XT is now offered in a lightweight version (6lbs+) and has a vestibule. Sleeps 2.

If you're going to have a tent companion, choose a tent where people can exit without having to climb over each other.

I was looking for a Eureka that is kinda neat..I think it's the Apex XT, but I couldn't find it...discontinued?

Sandy, that tent is in the Campmor New Years 2002 catalog (hard copy, not on-line). Check page 120 - the "2XT" is on sale for $109.97
