I'm looking for feedback from people on whether to allow this sort of message.

Tim asked my permission before making this posting. I told him we would use the posting as a trial. The criteria for his post was he had to specify the job location in the subject, and
could not include the name of the company looking for staff.

I think it is a fine idea. As someone else said, how many are we going to
see anyway? I do know the likely company and I do know Tim. It is always
interesting scuttlebutt when you see such a notice. If we wind up seeing a
deluge of such announcements and ones about kayak businesses for sale etc.
then maybe would need to reconsider.

In the meantime, there have to be some PaddleWisers with necessary skills
who want to take a sabbathical from their daily routine and come for a year
or more to NYC for a change of scenary. Same with kayak businesses for
sale. Since this listserve is subscribed to by real aficionados, someone
might want to try a hand at owning a business in New Zealand or an Alaskan
one that may be up for sale.

Which leads to another question: If you had your choice of where to be a
kayak instructor or guide or run a small shop, where in the world would you
like to do this?

As an owner of a commercial paddlesports shop I see no reason why some
tasteful "Help Wanted" notices can't be posted on PW. It gives participants
an opportunity to see where help is needed and possibly drum up some
movements to areas in need. To think that the right posting could mean a
life-style change for some poor cubical worker who's looking for an escape
is pretty cool. I think the subject heading could say reflect the tone of
the post, as was stated by many. The other option could be to start a
Commercial notice forum similar to the one started on the Greenland forum.
It gives folks the option to check out the commercial side of things. Or
not.

My disagreement with the layout of the qajaqusa site is the email addresses of those
posting are accessable - leaving them fodder for spammable email address harvesting scum.

www.nspn.org does a nice job with the bulletin boards at their site - but I haven't got the time to recreate what they've done.

My disagreement with putting anything onto the paddlewise website is I want no part of being
the editor of "perishable" website content - be it help wanted, events, for sale....

It is entirely possible to encode these email addresses using
javascript. They will work correctly, but will be unharvestable. I do
this at my own website, and for all those I design and/or maintain.

This is definitely preferable but at this point, they don't do that
and I think a lot of folks are not aware that their email addresses
*are* available for harvesting from the website by spammers. This is
why PaddleWise doesn't include email addresses on the website in
connection to postings (unless a poster has given the ok to include
his/her email address). Also, many folks include email addresses
within their messages/replies and not all javascripts catch those.

I like the idea of posting job openings.

My thinking is that Paddlewise is a fantastic place to train new paddlers.
This happens all the time, and many people benefit. Posting job openings
plain and simply encourages instructors to spend more time hanging out on
paddlewise, helping beginners. Does anyone have a problem with this? I
doubt that the volume of job postings would ever become overwhleming and
lead to spam.

I work in the kayak instruction industry as a hobby mainly, so I personally
am *very* interested in job openings in exotic locales. Perhaps I'll quite
my day job if the right job opened up. Nope, I've never been to New York...
;) I'm not sure I would consider that exotic though. To answer Ralph, I
would love to teach kayaking in New Zealand. That is, if the Kiwi's would
allow a No-Rudder Heretic like me to enter the country. ;)

Yeah, OK, but you will have to learn to drive on the proper side of the
road. Even worse, you will have to confess that American navigation buoys
and beacons have red and green reversed from what is right and proper - IALA
region A system here, you guys are the B graders.

What if the job opening was for a door-to-door spons*n salesman?

I bought a pair from a door-to-door salesman who was foaming at the mouth.
He spent a little over 14 hours explaining their benefits before I had to
call the police. He gave me a pair because I agreed to drop the charges. I
wear them in the bath tub; I was told that someone could drown in just a few
inches of water! However, I'm concerned that when I wear them while ocean
surfing-I wear them like water wings, around my upper arms-that sharks teeth
might puncture them! Any opinions?
