One other tip. Remember camping in those old 80 pound stinky canvas tents
back in the 50's and how dad (this was the 50's remember -- it always
seemed to be "dad") would secure the corners with heavy steel spikes?
Although modern tents have long ago abandoned spikes because of the weight,
for kayaking they are inexpensive, considerably stronger than tent stakes,
and work well when you have really hard ground to penetrate (assuming you
can get them back out after driving them through hard pan!). Yes, you need
something heavy to drive them with, but I've always been able to find a
rock or big stick to pound them in.
