All,

Firstly I'd like to thank Shawn Baker and Mark Zen for
their timely posting of hypothermia tables and
information, and willingness to share. I think the
added insights regarding dexterity and clothing are
things we need to know an discuss and refine. I'd
like to see some actual research regarding the effects
of protective clothing (as we know it) on the onset of
symptoms, etc. Especially in cases where the air and
water temps are highly divergent, creating rules of
thumb about clothing based entirely on water temp may
be misleading and/or subject to complete disregard.
As you will see, cold is a particular interest of
mine.

Secondly, welcome to the 2002 paddling season in the
Northern Latitudes (as the snow falls outside my
window)! For any of you who wonder when the season
starts in upstate NY, well, it was about a month ago.
I have been out cleaning local creeks of deadfall and
debris with some of the crazier paddlers around. I
have posted a photo for your enjoyment. This was
taken on 10-March, the morning after the first creek
run of the year. This boat was left on the rack
outside so it would be ready to relaunch the next
day....
