Yeah Niels, it seems that these rule apply to a kayak going more that 2
miles from firm land. I'm still waiting for firm information and will
probably have to write to FFCK which is French for kayak federation. Like
you I am still fuming about some of their rules. I just found out that a
foldable is (maybe) not allowed as seagoing kayak as it is not rigid enough.
How many French tupperwares have crossed the Atlantic, I wonder?
I have just slipped over the edge into the no legislation/let nature cull
the stupid ones brigade.
More news soon, in the meantime, I recommend not understanding the language
or the regulations if you go to kayak in French waters.
Perhaps we should organise a protest paddle of foldables around French
territorial waters!
Cheers,
Kevin.

Ther German Canoe-Union (DKV = Deutscher Kanu Verband) has already
protested against the silly French regulations. For those of you, who
understand German: you can read the regulations (and their history) on
the website of the DKV:

I wonder how Nautiraid, French manufacturers of foldable kayaks, have
reacted to this (maybe there is a special dispensation for Nautiraids but
not Kleppers / Feathercraft/ etc. : wouldn't surprise me :-) ). I believe
the French military use Nautiraids, so I look forward to hearing about the
gendarmerie arresting french commandos.

Of course every democratic nation must decide its own rules and
regulations. But kayakers are an international lot. Even if it not our
place to protest outside our own countries, we should certainly at least
let the French authorities know how their extreme and non-sensical
restrictions will damage tourism. I have just bought a Feathercraft, and I
do go on holidays to France: so this is far from academic for me. Anyone
have any idea who I should direct my comments to in France?

At least, the stupid french regs ban the french seapaddlers and not the
foreign ownss. IF the tourist paddlers could confirm that their seakayak
hits the regulation of the country their coming from...
Sounds easy, but its quite a problem, i.e. here in germany we got no
"official" regulations on seakayaks.
But you can hand your kayak to some "specialists" and if your kayak is
OK/safe in their opinion, you pay some money and get a fee which says "Yep,
approved and hits the german reg..."

Strange world,
bye
Jochen - donīt like to go to france

Perhaps the French should install some inflatable airbags on their kajaks! That
would solve the problem with their flotation requirements:)
