i use a lightning offshore paddle. the blade is too long for a foam
float. anyone have any ideas? i loved this using-the-float-to-lean-over idea.

(i guess i could put it on one of the extra paddles we carry, but i would
like something that fits <my> paddle, which i'm inordinately fond of.)

There are some inflatable paddle floats that are really big and will fit
any paddle blade. You can have it conveniently folded on your deck, and it
is very easy to put on the paddle-blade and filled enough with a couple of
lung loads. Most all kayak stores carry them.

The reason that I suggested the foam float was because of the
convenience. Last time I paddled when I used that cooling method it was so
hot that I must have cooled off that way a dozen times during a three hour
paddle. Inflating and deflating the float that often would get pretty
tiresome after awhile. With the foam float it can be slipped on and off
quickly.

Now I just do a deep high brace. A couple on each side, sticking my head
in the water before bracing is enough for a quick cool down. The other
thing I do when it's really hot is wear a baseball style cap that I don't
mind getting wet. As I'm paddling I can pull it off, dip it in the water,
and put it back on without losing a stroke.

kcd-

I use Inuit paddles and dealt with short floats for years. I have no idea
what a lightning paddle looks like but Spirtline Kayaks, Anacortes WA
makes inflatable float for long skinny blades. Solved my float problem
real quick. Great web site: Skinboats.com.

I'm fond of my lightning(s) too (have 3 now). Use the
float on your hand.
