Here are a couple of sites relating to current discussion. This was a test between various exposure suits: <http://www.nhrc.navy.mil/Pubs/Abstract/95/41.html> This is the suit cited in the above test (for context only if you want) <http://www.tpub.com/1ase2/28.htm> (This is an interesting survival site, with the "introduction" mentioning kayaking): <http://www.caske2000.org/ngo/survival/survivesea.htm> I really like Mark's site, too. I think there's more to Mark than meets the eye. Well done. I did some research recently for a Sea Kayaker Magazine article on an Arctic incident where a couple died wearing anti-exposure suits. From what I could gather, it is essential that paddlers risking immersion in cold water below 40 degrees F wear suits that seal at all openings. Rob asked what ever happened to Doc Haward from U-VIC. I guess he grew cold to hypothermia research :-) Anyway, I do know research continues but the level required to perform realistic experiments usually requires volunteers to take risks not sanctioned by educational facilities and medical certification boards. I would like to see some research into cold water immersion and how various recreational attire effects functional survival time, either official or not. Any volunteers to do the rectal temperature measurements? You would think someone like Canoe & Kayak Magazine would be bold enough to step forward for the challenge. Well, by the time I get my drysuit from Whites, it'll be "sauna season". Testing will have to wait.
