I have a friend down in Tampa who is interested in getting some
recommendations for kayaking lessons in the region.

He's done some kayaking in protected waters on a SOT, but he realizes that
he will need to develop bracing, rolling and rescue skills before he gets
into anything more serious.

Does anyone have any recommendations for good kayak schools in the area?

I will assume that if you reply to this message with a recommendation that
you are by default giving me permission to pass this to someone that is not
a part of this list.

I actually had a couple classes from Russell and Jean from Sweetwater Kayaks
in of all places, Orcas Island, WA.They often travel and teach nationally
with the BCU regime, which is how I met with them. I would vouch for them as
they are as good of instructors as they are paddlers. (That's not as easy as
it sounds.) I think Sweetwater is in the Tampa area. On the personal side of
things they are thoroughly cool people to hang around.

Sweetwater Kayaks on Tierra Verde.

Sweetwater consistently gets high marks from many of the people that I know
that visit the Tampa area. I was there in Feb and was impressed with their
operation. Located near Fort DeSoto. They are a BCU Premier Center, one of
maybe six in the country. Nigel Foster owns part interest in this shop.
http://www.sweetwaterkayaks.com/ You can reach them at(727)906-0708. I have
no connection to them other than as a satisfied customer.

I'm relatively new to paddling and recently took a two hour private lesson
with Steve at Bill Jackson's in Pinellas Park, a short drive from either Tampa
or St. Pete. Steve was excellent. I learned Paddlefloat and assisted rescues
as well as low and high braces and some basic strokes.

The basic class is conducted in Bill Jackson's very nice heated pool. They
also teach rolling classes as well as intermediate level classes (which I plan
on taking as well).

Based on my experience, I can easily recommend taking a class from Steve at
Bill Jackson's. Their phone number is (727) 576-4169. Website address is
www.billjacksons.com.

I think these guys are very good. At least they put on a great symposium
every winter. Nigel Foster is one of the partners, so it's at least
conceivable that you might get instruction from him.
