I have fallen in love with the Mayan Seas Performa. It is slightly over 16
feet but easily keeps up with longer kayakers paddled by big guys who are
younger than me. It surfs like a dream. It has no skeg or rudder and must
be edged but in up to about 20mph winds/waves, to think direction is to
maintain it. ( I still have to work more on edging in big waves before I'm
safe to go ) This is a far cry from my Eddyline Raven which was determined
to weathercock and which was too big for me to edge. (I'm 5' 2" and 140#.)
The kayak surfs like a dream. So far I've only camped for a weekend out of
it but had lots of room. A group of us went down to Mexico and paddled with
Rafael. I have a friend who is an ex-football player and abut 6'3 and 190
pounds. He loved the boat and got in his first long surfing run in it.
This kayak is built in Mexico by Rafael Mier-Maza but he has some dealers in
the states, including Ken Johnson from this list. His site is at
http://www.mayanseas.com/. Both Ken and Rafael are on the list and will be
happy to respond to your questions.

He will probably be at our Labor Day get together at Padre Island. Ken
Johnson will definitely be there. I know there are other dealers in Florida
and California. All of you are welcome to come join us. We camp on Padre
Island, just a little ways from Corpus Christi, TX. We play in the surf
right outside our tents and go elsewhere for flat water paddles. We are
very loose and just have a list of good places and get up groups that want
to go paddle and off we go. We bring our own food and share it around.
Lots of fun. We should have some paddlers from Mexico join us this year.

Another good boat is the Sultan. I can't even remember the company that
makes it - one from Canada. But I was in lust over the original boat the
Paradigm. The guy sold the last for the larger boat which became the
Sultan. I paddled it for several hours and found it had much too much
volume for my size and paddling it really tore up my body. But guys over
5'10" love it. It has many of the properties of my boat.

Azul Kayaks (www.azulkayaks.com) makes a boat called a Sultan.
