Greetings- I was visited by an old friend yesterday (5/27). Karen Richardson is her name. Karen was out for a paddle. Nothing unusual about that, people paddle everyday you say. I agree except that when Karen goes out for a paddle, Karen goes out for a paddle. We first met several years ago, she was buying her first kayak for her first trip. Her first trip was the Florida peninsula. She planned to paddle north from New Smyrna (just south of Daytona) into the St. Mary's River (north of Jacksonville) which would take her west to the Okeefenokee Swamp. A quick car trip skirting the southern end of the swamp would put her back on the water via the Suwanee River. You know "Way down upon the Suwanee River ....." The Suwanee deposits you into the Gulf of Mexico after 200+ miles. The trip continued down the West coast of Florida, 'round the Keys and up the East coast to New Smyrna. This was mainly a solo trip, people would join her for short stretches along the way. If the weather was less than cooperative she would wait it out for a few days or catch a ride home. This trip is slightly different. Karen plans to paddle from New Smyrna Beach, Florida to Nashua, New Hampshire. She plans to arrive in Nashua for her thirty year High School reunion. Last night, I directed her to a safe campsite after procuring the owner's permission. This morning she is on her way north. Her plan is a very loose one at best, start here and finish there. She is without Internet access and only uses her Cell phone for outgoing calls. My suggestion to her was to sign on to Paddlewise at her earliest convenience. I am hoping that she will do so as I am certain that Paddlewisers along the East Coast will help her along the way. http://www.news-jounalonline.com will provide interested persons with more background.
