Ulli said: <snip> Sad news in today's newspaper (Herold/Halifax) about a fatality in the sea kayaking part of an adventure race last Saturday in New Brunswick. Hypothermia claimed another life. <snip> I got hold of the owner of the company who sponsored the event. There was a lot of misinformation (as per usual) in the media. He's tentatively agreed to give me the lowdown when things calm down, for official publication in SK Magazine (if they accept my manuscript). He gave me more details than he gave to even the media or fellow guide companies pestering him with questions. I said I'd button-up for now. All I can say is that the kayaker in question was given ample opportunity to bail out a number of times. If the story is compelling enough I'm willing to put the work into an article (for SK). I've just finished the one on the Baffin Island incident from 4 years ago that showed up initially on PW (August 2002 issue). While the remuneration isn't fully compensatory with the amount of work that goes into this brand of investigative journalism, SK does provide the best venue for incident peer review in my neck of the woods. I think another PW'er has one on the go too.
