It makes small indentations in the surface of whatever material and depending upon the intensity set you vary the depth of said indentations. I then take a liquid ink/paint pen of the permanent persuasion and fill the depressions. Wipe the surface clean and voila - the text remains. On soft/flexible material I use the liquid paint pens. They come in all colors so you can find the appropriate contrast necessary. Does not prevent theft but it is a deterrent. I have been using the Uni Paint pens. Works well on my Werner paddles also. It sure helps in a group where much of the gear may be identical. Learned this many years ago while SCUBA diving.
