I recently got a slightly used kevlar/carbon kayak. I just noticed that the inside of the cockpit (floor, sidewalls, even the underside of the deck) picked up a milky, white appearance since the last time I used the boat, 2 days ago. When I put the boat away 2 days ago, I took everything out, and wiped the boat out with a sponge like I always do. I also left the boat in my garage, uncovered (no cockpit cover). When I stored the boat this milky appearance wasn't there. It has been very humid the last couple of days. I figured it must have absorbed moisture from the air, and so I held a hair dryer on it for a minute or so and the milky appearance went away, and the glossy black carbon appearance came back. Although there are some scratches on the bottom of the hull from the previous owner, none of them appear to be through the gelcoat, so I don't think water was taken up through the bottom of the boat. Is it possible for the boat to absorb moisture from the air, and would this cause a milky appearance? The resin used is vinylester. Is there any cause for concern? Any insights will be greatly appreciated. *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s).
