Hi You wrote: --- Anybody got a Civic Coupe? I'm looking at a 2001, and was wondering how well it shoulders a kayak. The roof is pretty small and sloped. I assume I'll have to get racks with the extender... Thanks --- Normally I use pads and straps - front and back tiedowns and one strap threaded through the doors as far back as it will go. I also strap the pads to the kayak deck before putting it on the car and carry the boat hull side up. Let's see, so far that's five straps car to kayak and two straps with the pads on the kayak. Yikes! I didn't go with the rack plus extender because the extender is fiddly with trying to keep it properly torqued. Oh yeah, sometimes I run yet another strap through the doors and over the kayak as far forward as I can get it; that arrangement is reserved only for really strong winds since the strap can wick rain inside, where it drips rather annoyingly on my leg. The real solution I'm going to use is a trailer. See Wes Boyd's kayak page; I did something very similar to that but don't have a hitch on the Civic yet. The hitch is on the Saturn sedan, so I just take that car much of the time now.
