George, After watching a flare demonstration in Wayne Horodowich's video on recoveries and rescues, I realized that my handheld flares were not sufficient by themselves. The sky blazer type flares had a lot of misfires and burned fingers frequently so I ruled them out. IMHO, the best flares for ease of use and dependability were the 12 gauge pistol flares. Granted the 25 gauge would be better, but they are too big and bulky for a kayak. I bought a 12 gauge pistol and keep the gun, shells, handheld flares in a dry bag that is either kept behind my seat or in my day hatch. Using a "real" drybag has kept them in perfect condition and I never was much of a fan of keeping pyrotechnics on my body.
