On a wood boat, the carved, burned, stamped etc HIN can be removed with sanding, wood filler, or so forth. Therefore, the HIN printed on rice paper and placed under the fiberglassing might be just as good, would be readable in a small type size, could be done "neatly" (not as in "cool" but as in not messy) and could be done in such a way that it would not be ugly or evident until you looked for it in the prescribed position on the boat. Ross Leidy put a "signature" on his strip built Guillemot using this method. I haven't actually done it, but I'd sure give it a try before the other methods. Just a thought.
