With all the debate going on about immersion gear, I noticed that nobody has mentioned the old 110/120 degree rule of thumb? I was taught in ww kayak class to add the air temp and water temp. Guys use 110 degrees as a rule of thumb on when to put on gear and women use 120 degrees because they just get colder faster. If it ends up much below 100, a drysuite or really thick wetsuite is required. Then adjust your judgement based upon how much exposer you expect. So playing near the put-in requires less gear and a crossing, possible protracted swim or rougher water requires more gear. It always seemed kind of reasonable to me. Scot Yahoo!
