Hi, all. To cut to the chase, I need to purchase some new coolers. I need them to be rugged and well insulated. Primary use will be for 3-5 day family camping outings at State Parks and similar situations, and will possibly be loaded into canoes. Igloo has a 50 qt Ultracold that is supposed to keep ice for 5 days in 90 degree heat. Anybody have one and can offer a testimonial? And, for the life of me, the only cooler companies that are coming to mind are Igloo and Coleman. Can you name a few others that I can search on - I'm drawing a blank. Oh, and to keep it relevant to Kayaking, I'll be taking my boats with me for some multi-hour paddling during these trips. Thanks a bunch. (Ok - I drew a blank and had to go look through our collection of coolers for that :-) Rubbermaid (ahhh - I looked through a store catalog for that one). Then there's Koolatron and others that make small electric coolers - I remembered that one, but they're only useful on longer drives to your destination - you can plug them into the car accessory socket and keep them cold on the way to the camping site. I don't know about 5 days in 90 degree heat. I do know the Igloo Ultracold works in 100+ degree heat, direct sun for 2-3 days. regular coolers work just one day the that kind of heat. Tip: put duct tape all around the closure and don't open it until you have to. We use the ice packs that you fill with water and freeze - and then have cold water to drink. This avoids the melting ice issue, but ice does keep for a long time. I also have the smaller one (can't find #quarts on it) and it is wonderful. It's slightly taller and holds a champagne bottle upright (!). Last weekend we went out on Friday and still had some ice cubes on sunday...but it wasn't taped shut and we opened it frequently. *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s).
