Oooh! The gauntlet has been cast down!!

watertight they would be. After spending several hours in it on
Sunday, rolling dozens of times, the bow hatch was bone dry. When I
opened the stern hatch, I discovered that the hook I had glued to the
inside of the hatch cover had come loose (I think because I had epoxied
it after the cover had developed a bit of amine blush).

Another problem is heat and epoxy. Your boat can get pretty hot if
it's outside in the hot sun. With the hook being "eccentrically"
loaded, it's easy for them to pop loose if the epoxy warms and softens.
Roughing the underside of the hatch cover well with some 60-grit
before gluing doesn't hurt, either.

Just last night, I added glass fillets to the inside of my hooks. Over
the course of 2.5 years of paddling this boat, I've had 5 of 8 pop
loose. I'm tired of regluing them and I think the greater bond area
presented by the glass will help significantly.

These hatches also start to leak after about 2 seasons--replace the
weatherstripping and all's well.
