I have arrived at the same conclusions.

That said, once in a while the wife would still balk. 
No apparent reason why she picked a particular boat or
time, but it did happen.  On one occasion I thought I
had had it.  My daughter sided with her on this
particular boat.  She said in her most disapproving
tone (in front of my wife, no less), "Dad, you didn't
REALLY get another boat did you?".  Since she suddenly
had an ally the wife was really fired up.

Fortunately, I headed it off by saying, "Yes, come
outback and look at it".  My daughter took one look
and said "Oh, it's a squirt boat.  Now I understand".

With the sudden loss of an ally, my wife dropped it
and never mentioned it again.
