Many years ago I posted a message on the tandem_at_hobbes, tandem bicycle,
mailing list about how to handle the problem of "what do you need another
[insert name of toy here] for". The strategy was first developed by Patrick
McManus author of The Grasshopper Trap (also They Shoot Canoes, Don't They,
Real Ponies Don't Go Oink!, Never Sniff a Gift Fish, and A Fine and Pleasant
Misery. In The Grasshopper Trap there is a chapter titled Gun-running in
which McManus provides a primer on strategies and tactics for bringing a new
gun home. This advice is appropriate for [insert name of new toy here]
collectors also.
I modified the story for tandem bicycles and it was further modified for
kayaks and posted on the web. The story has some length to it and since it
has been posted on the web, I will direct you to the site instead of filling
your mailbox. Take a look at
http://www.nswseakayaker.asn.au/articles/more.htm for an answer to that
ever-present question of " what do you need another ... "?
If anyone would like a back channel copy, please contact me.
This is a proven strategy, I now have 12 bicycles and 3 tandems (but, only
two kayaks so far - I have some work yet to do).
