I am considering purchasing a paddling jacket that will fit over both my
spraydeck and PFD, so I will be able to put it on and take it off according
to changing conditions without having to land on shore to do so safely.

Is anyone already doing this, and if so, how much larger a size than normal
should I get? Unfortunately, I live in an area where none are available to
try on.

Thanks! merlin

Merlin,

I'd go at least 1 size bigger, probably 2. PFD takes up alot of room and if
you want to put on/ take off _at_ sea, with ease. The bigger the better.

Personally, I find a logical guess at the undergarmets required and a
gore-tex jacket with latex cuffs works well. I very seldom have to make
adjustments and then when I do, I get assistance if necessary. Taking an
XXL paddle jacket off over a PFD is going to be a chore, maybe just as big
as doing the PFD, then the PJ. Plus if you have *any*
rescue/safety/convienience items on your PFD it's buried under your jacket.
Plus it's the insulation layers I'm wanting to get to anyway. The PJ is
just weather/splash protection, which in my case (choppy/swells/surf
paddling) is always needed. It's the layers of capilene that get adjusted.
Or easier yet, the hat. I use a hat to fine tune my temperature.

What I do pack is a XXL coated raincoat w/hood. This *does* fit over
everything and is great to throw on over everything. Lunchtime and breaks
find me seriously bundled in the works (w/ BIG fleece hat!) I have never
needed to paddle in the raincoat, tho I'm sure it can be done. There's a
Cag designed for this, avilable thru Great River Outfitters dealers, tho
it's $$$. It's even a sprayskirt!

just 2 centavos!

Hi There,
Rain can be devestating for any kayaker who happens to get caught in a
downpour. We all know that kayaking is a wet sport, but we don't need to get
drenched by rain. Merlin was asking about an overjacket. I haven't tried
this product but NRS have obviously thought about rain too!. Introduced this
year, NRS are producing an `over shell' jacket based on their breathable Sea
Tour paddling jacket - it's designed to fit over the PFD. I noticed it in
their new catalogue. It's also on their web site catalogue. Check out Re:
http://www.nrscatalog.com/ Needless to say I have no affiliation with
NRS,xcept as a happy customer.
As to the West Coast kayak Symposium. I will be there as part of Seaward
Kayaks marketing team. Seaward is my employer. Any paddlewiser will be
assured of a warm welcome at the Seaward booth.

After reading about a paddling jacket fitting over a PFD, I starting
thinking about early Christmas presents for me. You know the kind...you buy
'em and put them under the tree for you, "from Santa".

The first thing on my list is a new PFD. My current one is getting pretty
ratty from practice self-rescue work and general wear and tear. I am
primarily a day tripper on Lake Michigan, 5'11", 220 and own a CD Solstice.
I am partial to the Lotus Locean. Any works of wisdom?

Best Regards,

Tony Reynes

G'Day,

My situation exactly. Need a new life jacket and looking at the Kokatat
which is a PFD3. I'm a bit confused over what constitutes a suitable PFD for
sea conditions. Over here its supposed to be a PFD 1 or 2 for offshore. But
as far as i can tell the major difference between a PFD2 and a PFD3 is the
colour and the Kokatat comes in a "mango" color which looks as though it
should be clearly visible. I was attracted by the D rings and pockets for
gear and EPIRB (or food bars). But maybe these also contrbute to the lower
'rating' 3 vs 2?

Interested to hear what people think.

All the best, PeterO

Just returned from a marvelous 9 days kayaking deep in Alaska's Prince
William Sound. More on that later.

But I wanted to chime in on Kokotat's "mango" color. A few people had this
on the trip, and we all said how markedly more visible it was than the
other PFDs.

On the other hand, I found the Kokotat PFDs a bit too bulky, but I guess
that is the price of extra flotation.

As usual SeaKayaker did a review of a number of paddling jackets recently.
Don't recall the month but you could easily look it up on their website.
As I recall they included the NRS over PFD jacket, but I think the balance
were under the PFD.

I was paddling out of Bamfield this weekend. As it was only a short
trip, I had room to bring a full-fledged rainproof parka with hood. It
also worked well as a pillow while in its waterproof bag. It was sure
nice to have in the cooler mornings and evening rain showers. On a
longer trip I generally omit an item like this due to space
considerations, instead wearing my wet paddling jacket with a rain hat
and/or generally keep under a tarp or in the tent. I also carry a poncho
on longer multi-day trips, wrapped in a small factory sealed package for
emergency use. I have in the past used a more compressible (than the
parka), older paddling jacket with hood that works great as a backup
paddling jacket and as around camp rain wear. Trouble is it is not very
comfortable for either.

I'd kind of like to buy a rain jacket, full cut with hood, that is both
_durable_ and compressible (totally waterproof/windproof). It need not
be breathable.

As for the original thread, I do not see the efficiency of a paddling
jacket that fits over a PFD. But I've never tried it out or actually
seen anyone using this type of garb.

Hope your "jumping ship" is working out for you. Seaward are great
folks, with a good product. I've seen a number of custom kevlar Seawards
on the water, with nothing but praise from the owners. I had an
impromptu race with one of them this weekend. It took a bit of work to
overtake him, though a quartering fishboat wake from astern threw the
Ascente (I believe) off course faster than the Nordkapp (the fellow was
an good paddler). None of the Seaward owners I've bumped into lately
have had any leakage problems. This isn't true with some of the Nimbus
kayaks, and others.

I notice Wendell Phillips is one of the noteworthy presenters at the
symposium this year with his Greenland slides. Should be a good show
(Wendel is such a great guy, and a Christian BTW who lives an truly
ethical life). I can't make the symposium. Have fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
