I finally got pictures developed of the launch of the Outer Island I
finished building in June. I've included them as part of a "Building an
Outer Island" site.

The "launch" pix are at the "Finished Boat" link.

Very, very nice! So..... what will you be building next? I hear it's very, very addictive!

My quest for an OI is progressing, although slowly. Nonetheless, I feel like I'm on track for my schedule. I'm still planning on beginning construction in November. I'm 3/4 through studying/reading Nick's book, have made numerous decisions about wood choices, will modify to a keyhole cockpit, will do flush wood hatches, etc etc etc. Still thinking and rethinking the main artistic design for the deck, though. Won't know that for sure until I clamp some outline strips on the forms to see the basic design in full scale.

Congratulations, again!

Rick

Nice boat!
Could you share the specs with us?
How long, how wide, how heavy?

The Outer Island is a design by Jay Babina. It's 17'10" long with a 21"
beam. One of the reason I chose this design is the low rear deck. I can
sit in it, lay back until I can touch my head on the rear deck without my
butt leaving the seat. Even though it's a low volume boat there's still
enough of an arch in the foredeck so that my feet don't feel cramped. I
haven't weighed it yet but I've carried it just after carrying a kevlar
Seaward Endeavor and it felt lighter. I've guessing that it's in the low 40's.

BTW, Jay's site (where you, too, can order plans) is at:
www.seacanoe.org/outrisle.htm

I've been extremely happy with the overall performance of the Outer Island
now that I've been paddling it a couple of months. If you want it to go
straight, it goes straight. I have found no tendency whatsoever for it to
weathercock even in some pretty gusty winds. When edged over for turns it
feels much shorter than it's length. With a low or high brace turn, all it
takes are one or two sweeps with the boat still on edge to finish a turn of
180 degrees. I sculls and rolls very easily.

BTW, I am going to be passing through Halifax on Wednesday on the way to a
meeting in St. Johns, NF.
