Here's how I've addressed the "what do you need another kayak for" dilema. I
believe in reaching a critical mass of 3 to 4 kayaks. It also helps to return
home with other people's kayaks on your car. Tell her you are carrying them
or storing them for friends. If you have kids it also helps to get them
kayaks. An occasional nice present for the wife will also work wonders.

Periodically sell a kayak or leave it with a friend for a period of time.
This provided the illusion of reducing the fleet, and the additional of
another kayak becomes less noticeable.

Finally, be supportive of the wife's hobbies. Pay her credit card bills
without asking probing questions as to the meaning of the charges.

Finally, by the time you fleet reaches 8 or so kayaks, they just give up.

I have applied this theory to gold clubs, wood working tools, photography
equipment and kayaks for 22 wonderful years of marriage. Of course my will
places my "toys" into a trust fund under the careful stewardship of my lawyer
brother. And, if my testimony is not enought, my father followed this same
theory for 55 years of marriage.

Now, since the woman out there in paddlewise land may react to the male
nature of my reply and advice, please simply turn the table and substitute
husband for wife and it will also work for you.

I have arrived at the same conclusions.

That said, once in a while the wife would still balk.
No apparent reason why she picked a particular boat or
time, but it did happen. On one occasion I thought I
had had it. My daughter sided with her on this
particular boat. She said in her most disapproving
tone (in front of my wife, no less), "Dad, you didn't
REALLY get another boat did you?". Since she suddenly
had an ally the wife was really fired up.

Fortunately, I headed it off by saying, "Yes, come
outback and look at it". My daughter took one look
and said "Oh, it's a squirt boat. Now I understand".

With the sudden loss of an ally, my wife dropped it
and never mentioned it again.

I've been married 15 years and my wife puts up with Kayaks and antique
single shot rifles. Stored everywhere. As long as I don't go crazy, " I
don't chase other women, I don't gamble, I don't hang out in bars and come
home drunk, I'm polite to your mother, and never forget your birthday or
our anniversary" works great, but you absolutely, no exceptions, no
apologies, must abide by those self imposed rules. Violate any one and
you're in trouble plenty old boy.

<How to tell your wife about your new kayak>

Patrick McManus can help you on that one, with great insight in the
psychology of marriage and the psychology of women. You might even be
tempted to keep buying kayaks, just to see if the strategy works. I
found it on the net, on the link below.

Many years ago I posted a message on the tandem_at_hobbes, tandem bicycle,
mailing list about how to handle the problem of "what do you need another
[insert name of toy here] for". The strategy was first developed by Patrick
McManus author of The Grasshopper Trap (also They Shoot Canoes, Don't They,
Real Ponies Don't Go Oink!, Never Sniff a Gift Fish, and A Fine and Pleasant
Misery. In The Grasshopper Trap there is a chapter titled Gun-running in
which McManus provides a primer on strategies and tactics for bringing a new
gun home. This advice is appropriate for [insert name of new toy here]
collectors also.
I modified the story for tandem bicycles and it was further modified for
kayaks and posted on the web. The story has some length to it and since it
has been posted on the web, I will direct you to the site instead of filling
your mailbox. Take a look at
http://www.nswseakayaker.asn.au/articles/more.htm for an answer to that
ever-present question of " what do you need another ... "?
If anyone would like a back channel copy, please contact me.
This is a proven strategy, I now have 12 bicycles and 3 tandems (but, only
two kayaks so far - I have some work yet to do).

As a dedicated gun runner for many years I confess to using most of the
McManus techniques at one time or another, but rifles are easier to deal
with than kayaks. Easier to toss in a closet or safe. My wife doesn't
swim. She will approve of any double I wish to buy or construct and if a
single happens to come with the double that's OK. I'm working on it, and
so far my interest has sparked her to actually ask me to teach her how to
swim. She wants to swim because she wants to kayak. This is great coming
from a woman who left permanent fingerprint in a rental double the first
time I took her out. It may take some time to generate real interest but
once you take someone out a few times, it seems to take on a life of it's
own.
