For sea kayakers, vhf radios offer a lot more value than walkie talkies. 
Hand-held VHFs give you long battery life. There are rechargeables that are 
waterproof, but I prefer those that accept double A batteries. But you'd need 
to buy two. VHFs and walkie talkies are not communications compatable.

The Cobra FRS radios have an optional NiMH battery pack--these may fit
in your radio.  If not, look for the NiMH individual rechargeable
batteries.

Li Ion batteries would work well, too, but are really expensive.
