Chuck,
I have a very reliable roll, have practiced paddlefloat self rescues, but
still carry sponsons as a back up to a back up.  Have you tried them?  My
boat (Mariner Express) is pre-rigged for sponsons.  I can attach them,
inflate them and re enter in about 3 minutes and could probably beat that
time if I practiced more.  The main advantage is the ease of pumping out in
choppy water with the sponsons attached.  You can then relax after a capsize
and gather your wits.

Why belittle them?  They are just another safety tool.
