>110 > km is a hellova long way. Were there many sea kayak entrants? How many start > and how many finish? Hi folks, here in Germany are several long distance river Rallye´s, you can´t call them race, even if some paddlers behave like on a race. The most classical one is the Weser-Marathon, very famous and old touring river. You´ve the choise from 54, 80 and 135km, daylight and more or less moderate river-stream. This yar there had been high water and the fstets one, in normal touring kayaks, finished in about 8 hours (for the 135km distance). Normally it take about 10-11 hours and there´re many finishers (few 100). Another classical one is the Aller Highwaterrallye, each year on marchs last saturday. Most people start for the 55km distance and about 50 go for the 112km, including up to 4 portages, mostly bad weather. the more water and wind, the more difficult it is, it is harder than to paddle 135 in may, for sure. In June there is the Elbe Mammot Marathon from Meissen (shortly behind Dresden) to Magdeburg. 2 days and 243 km! Only few participants but great for talking "sessions". There are several other Rallyes and Marathon, but always shorter. In Denmark there is the Tour de Gudenaa, every second year I thnk. Steen? River Gudenaa is almost standing on its last 120 Km and they paddle 2 days and on time. It´s a race and the fastest ones need 8 hours, I think. Never had joined it, maybe in few years. In Great Britain there is this extreme "D.W." Devize to Westminster (London), 200km and 75 (!!!) portages. First half is on channels, second half on the river themse, every year on easter. I read this in an old seakayaking magazin from 1988, don´t know if its still in the world... *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s).
