My wife laughs at me, but when we are on the road, I get paranoid about
leaving the kayak on the roof rack in a motel parking lot. My answer was to
buy 30' of 1/2" chain. I make a loop with a padlock and put it over the
stern of the boat. I then run the chain under the car and take up the slack
and make a loop over the bow end. The chain can't be pulled off either end,
and if a baddie tries to monkey with it, the car's motion alarm goes off. I
sleep well.

Best Regards,

Tony Reynes

writes about theft and chains and alarms.

Yes you are a paranoid. The thieves will now take your car too; and your
chain. And your motion alarm will fall on deaf ears. I would add a truck
club in the cockpit. Yes all of these are easily breached. A 3/8" cable
goes in less time than it takes to say it. Half inch chain assumes the
thieves are kids who can't afford a bolt cutter. They can tow your car you
know? Bottom line: keep it sight at all times, and plan on ground floor
hotel rooms with looonnnnggggg room hallways. Sleeping in the car helps as
well. What me paranoid? Whatever gave you that notion?
