Like Niels, I have two sea kayaks and have mastered the hand roll in only one of the, a VCP Pintail. My hand rolling instructor was Cindy Cole who won her class at the Greenland National Championships recently. She had me demonstrate my throwing stick roll (a sweep) and then do it again without the throwing stick. I hand rolled successfully. After knocking off most rolling for the winter I "lost" my hand roll. Cindy told me to do 100 throwing stick rolls and I would have my hand roll back. It worked (somewhere short of 100). A few years later, I successfully tried hand rolling a whitewater kayak and for some reason switched to a C2C style hand roll. I think it is because that is what I saw the others doing. That carried over to my sea kayak hand rolling and I now do a C2C type hand roll. In conclusion, I suggest you start trying it with the C2C motion since that is what you are now familiar with. If that fails, try using a throwing stick or similar aid until you get it down. BTW: Its easier to grab a throwing stick after a failed hand roll than a paddle half!
