I've been using the old Yakima TLC saddles for years, and they've
always been great for my single hard chine boat (Caribou). A while
back, I wanted a second set of saddles, so I ordered some Makos (all
that was currently available from Yakima). I was very
disappointed...same problems you had with them. I returned them.

I think the Mako design is inferior to the TLC saddles in several
ways, and would only fit a limited type of hull design (wide, rounded
hulls). Even if they "fit" such a hull, I don't really think they're a
very secure system. The little rubber inserts are just too small, and
in addition to the integrated strap system, one would still have to
use a secondary set of straps to secure the boat the the crossbars.

Here's the problem as I see it now...

The best solution is to find an old set of TLCs. However...anyone who
is happy with their TLCs is not going to let them go...especially
considering the alternative Yakima product (Mako).

I prefer the round Yakima crossbars over the Thule square bars, so
what I'd really like to see is a comeback of the TLC saddle (or
something very similar).
