Paddlewisers:
I am stoked! I cranked off a number of hand rolls in a whitewater boat in a
pool last night, the first time I have managed to roll any boat by hand.
After the first one, my head inflated with self congratulation, like a
natural cranium-sponson, so that the subsequent hand rolls were much easier.
Here's the question, after indulging my urge to brag (apologies): Does
anyone handroll their real, sea touring boat? By what method? What about a
loaded boat? Possible?

Nice job! I am trying to develop a hand roll at the moment. What
technique did you use (roughly speaking)? I am trying it in a CD Extreme
which is almost 19 feet long. In a recent pool session I felt I was getting
very close. Then I learned a one handed paddle roll that I think helped me
identify a few of the bugs in my hand roll attempts. By then the pool time
was up though so I did not have a chance to try to refine it any. The good
news is we are back in the pool this Sunday. Now not having pulled it off
just yet I can't say for sure if my boat will hand roll. From my experience
with other rolls and progress so far I think it will, and hopefully soon! A
member of our club hand rolls his Nordkapp Jubilee (Dennis are you here
somewhere?). He also gets credit for teaching me the cool one hand roll
as well!

I would be very interested in hearing any hand rolling tips, techniques,
etc.!!

FWIW, I know a woman who can hand roll a canoe!!! (WW OC1 with float
bags in it.) She can put down most bragging kayak hand rollers with
a simple demo! :-)

You should be able to hand roll a sea kayak as long as it's not too
stable. I've never seen anyone hand roll a _loaded_ kayak, but I
don't doubt someone can. It really depends on getting your technique
down cold.

I'm still working on a hand roll, but with my shoulders, I'm not
optimistic. Congrats!

Mike

Peter,

For a few years now, I've been able to hand roll white water kayaks with ease.
However, hand rolling a sea kayak evaded me until just recently, when I bought
a Boreal Design Ellesmere (17 foot), which has a low back deck and cockpit and
seemed to make the difference. Right now I am winding up my torso in a C to C
roll style, hip snapping, and then laying on the back deck, but I plan to
experiment with some other ways of doing it too. I have seen videos of people
hand rolling higher volume sea kayaks with ease. They all ended the hand roll
in the C to C position or leaning forward. Although rolling a fully loaded sea
kayak with a paddle is easy, I imaging that hand rolling one would be a lot
harder. My hand roll in a sea kayak isn't consistent enough yet to try in a
fully loaded one. I still think that for the most part a hand roll is party
trick, albeit a very cool one. Except when playing in the surf, I've still
haven't had to do a combat paddle roll yet (thanks to good bracing).

I have two touring kayaks, one of which I can handroll. The boat in
question is an Oasis Rainbow, which is a wide, very stable kayak, 4.25
meters long. The one I can not handroll is a Prijon Seayak.

I think there are two reasons why handrolling a whitewater boat is
"easy":
- Because of the low volume of the boat, you sit very low in the water.
When you roll it, you don't have to lift your own weight completely out
of the water. In a high-volume seakayak, you have to bring your weight
from completely submerged to completely out of the water.
- A whitewater boat is more stable then a seakayak. With the famous
hipsnap, you tilt the boat to a flat, stable position. After that, using
the stability of the boat, you can lift your body out of the water and
move it to any position you want. In a seakayak, you can't use this
stability. With the force of your roll, be it a paddle or a hand, you
have to lift yourself out of the water and into the stable position in
one go. That takes quite some force.

Although the actual handroll might be a party trick, practicing it is a
great way of perfecting your hipsnap. While practicing, you will have
lots of opportunity to practice your wet exit. You can put half of your
spare paddle under your bungies, make two attempts you handroll, then
grab the paddle and roll up with that, so you don't have to wet exit.

So, practicing your handroll, even if it will never succeed, will
improve your normal roll, your ability to take descisions while upside
down in the water, your wet exit, your rescues... That's a little more
then a "party trick", right?

Niels.

I just added it. There's no reason it can't be done in a kayak. It's slightly
different than one of Dutky's hand rolls.
