Hi all,

In the mid sixties, whist still at school, I built a "Tyne Rigid
Canoe"(kayak). It was of canvas on wood construction, single seat and about
nine/ten feet (ish?) long. I had some great fun in it and (a nostalgia thing,
I know plastic would perform better) I would very much like to build another.

The plans are long since lost (my old Woodwork Master tells me they went
missing over twenty years ago!) but I am hoping that someone on this list will
be able to help me with building information.

Ideally I would like to be able to borrow/copy a set of original plans
('though I'm aware that this is extremely unlikely) but pictures, dimensions
etc. may help to revive my memory enough to complete the task a second time.

If anyone has any information that may help me, will you please reply to
peterihoy_at_gtonline.net I would also appreciate details of suppliers of canvas,
rubberised paints etc. which I would require.

Thanks for taking the time to read this, all contributions will be greatly
appreciated.

Pete Rihoy,

Guernsey, C.I.

Peter, you are definitely a candidate to participate in the Guillemot canoe/kayak building forum. There are numerous people on that forum currently building SOF (skin on frame) boats, both canoes and kayaks, and there is a ton of valuable info being shared on all sorts of boat building topics. Check out this link... http://www.kayakforum.com/cgi-bin/Building/index.cgi Once there, you can either search their archives or just post new questions. It's an invaluable source if you are embarking on a boat building project.

Just as an FYI, there are folks on this (Paddlewise) forum who have and are building both kayaks and canoes and participate on the Guillemot site as well, so you will see some familar names.

Rick - Poquoson, VA (just starting the process of building an Outer Island Stripper designed by Jay Babina - setting the forms and milling the lumber)

George Putz's book "Wood and Canvas Kayak Building" ISBN 0-87742-258-3
has plans and instructions for boats that look like the
tyne/klepper/folbots.

Lots of answers here. I'm aware of boats covered with canvas,
polyester(dacron), nylon,
awning fabric, polyurethane membrane. For finishes latex paint, oil
based paint, beeswax,
hypalon, neoprene, aliphatic urethane, varnish, polyurethane(one and 2
part), and flexible epoxy.

The skin/frame boat mailing list archives at
http://www.rtpnet.org/robroy/baidarka/ has a search feature to head off
into the archives.
http://www.rtpnet.org/robroy/baidarka/books.html has a good list of
books, videos, and sources for materials and plans.

The qajaqusa site http://www.qajaqusa.org is another good source of
information.
