Aaron asked:
"What technique did you use (roughly speaking)?"
Start on the back deck, right hand across left shoulder, capsize left, roll
up right using a vigorous fling down with first the left, then the right
hand, and finish on the back deck.
"In a recent pool session I felt I was getting very close."
Keep at it mate, you'll get it. When you do, post a description to help us
other aspirants, (respirants?).

Michael writes:
"FWIW, I know a woman who can hand roll a canoe!!! (WW OC1 with float bags
in it.) She can put down most bragging kayak hand rollers with a simple
demo! :-)"
Amazing stuff. Is this roll on the rolling list website, or is that confined
to kayak rolls?

Duane writes:
"Right now I am winding up my torso in a C to C roll style, hip snapping,
and then laying on the back deck, but I plan to
experiment with some other ways of doing it too. I have seen videos of
people hand rolling higher volume sea kayaks with ease. They all ended the
hand roll in the C to C position or leaning forward."
Thanks for this, I had only tried back deck to back deck in my sea kayak
(same method as worked with the small boat in hte pool.

And thanks to other hand rolling posters for passing on methods and tips.

I learned to hand roll on my old Sea Lion after I had developed a 100% dependable paddle roll. I made two small (6" x 8"?) wooden rectangles out of thin scrap wood with finger holes. I learned the hand technique first with both, then with one in either hand, then I moved on to pure hands. The Dutky book is very helpful at this stage. I did the same to teach my 17-year old daughter how to hand roll the same boat a few years ago. (She's on the small side and that boat is relatively large for her!) For me the key is not neglecting the layback. Don't overlook the importance of fitting your boat to your size with minicell.

I agree that this is usually a party trick, albeit one that teaches other micro-skills that come in handy. One time when it actually was useful was when I was in rough water on Lake Michigan, congratulating myself for having gotten through a nasty surf and admiring the big waves rolling toward me. This was in the days when I sometimes carried only one paddle. You know what happened next. When the rogue six-footer dumped me unawares, snatching my paddle, I felt comfortable enough with my ability to roll with hands that, upside down, my eyes closed behind useless glasses, I deliberated whether to right myself immediately without the paddle and look for it on the surface or whether to feel around in the water for my paddle. Did the latter, found it, concluded that maybe physics keeps lost paddles close to a boat for a few seconds, and kept a tighter grip on the loom for the rest of the day. Sometimes we learn from doing stupid things. I always practice my hand roll and I always bring two paddles.

Pulling off your first handroll is almost as much of a rush as pulling
off your
first paddle roll.

Michael Daly put together a nice list of possible hand rolls, I've
misplaced the URL. I can do about 8 different ones in a whitewater boat.
In my sea kayak I'm only regularly successful with one style, and that
is without my pfd on. With a pfd on it's down around a 40% success rate.
My sea kayak hand roll leaves me on the back deck, start backwards,
finish backwards.

I expect the people capable of the straight jacket roll can roll a loaded
boat, with
ease.

It's been a while since I've added a roll - any new ones are
welcome.

Enjoy!
Mike
