Adding to Erik's response--there's a rather large group of sea kayakers in Milwaukee (40 minutes south of Sheboygan). Though not a formal club, the group paddles Saturday and Sunday year-round. We usually paddle early morning (9:30 a.m. on Saturdays and 9:00 a.m. on Sundays). Afterwards we go for coffee etc. The group includes sub-groups of rough water paddlers, fitness paddlers (training for competition), and many others, including some who only paddle the warmer months. We also practice rescues and towing on a regular basis, even in the winter months. During the summer/warmer months, we frequently paddle at Kohler-Andrae State Park just south of Sheboygan. There's also some kayakers in Sheboygan who welcome visitors and newcomers to the area. Under development is a water trail along Wisconsin's Lake Michigan shoreline that will link to the Illinois Water Trail to the south. This is a nice place to paddle and live, but you do need to be outfitted for cold water. While you're in the area for an interview, if you'd like to meet for coffee (or a beer) to discuss, or get together for a paddle on Lake Michigan send me an email back-channel and I'll seen you my phone number and see if we can work out the details. Finally, for a bit more info check out my website (www.wildernessconnection.com).
