A year or two ago I saw a "homemade" version of the JC Whitney Bed
Extender

being used to transport a couple of kayaks.  They had even rigged up
lights on the bed
extender.  They very much enjoyed not having to lift the boats beyond
waist height to
load them into the truck...  They had tie downs on the bed extender and
secured the bow toggles
at the front of the truck bed.
