Thanks Mike! Hmmm. How did John "cinch" the line to a cleat in the cockpit?
How is it tightened and fastened in the cockpit? How is it attached to the
underside of the hatch? Questions questions questions! Thanks to all of you
that are helping out here! (Big step to cut big holes in a beautiful boat,
eh?) Mike OB

I don't remember exactly what type of cleat he used, but I think it's
just a standard clamcleat.

I didn't look too carefully. I don't remember any bolts showing
thru, so it's probably some kind of glassed-in or glued in detail.

A number of folks will use a stainless, bronze or even plastic
piece that's bent to form an eyelet and then fiberglass over
the ends to form a tiedown. Short bits of tube glassed in will
provide something to tie into as well.

Here's a direct link to a photo of a homemade tiedown on Gabriel's
outfitting web page. The second is a link to a paddlewise discussion
on tiedowns.

If you're working with wood, attaching a hardwood bar almost the full length
of the hatch cover and then making a couple of notches or holes to tie in
will both stiffen the cover and provide a strong attachment.
