That can be a problem with integral skegs like Duane added to his kayak. It
is a bit of a debate, but I know good paddlers who would not ever go near a
kayak, such as the Nordkapp with fin-skeg, because it can be very difficult
to turn them into a strong wind. Duane may want to experiment on a safe
lee-shore, testing his modifications. Just the fact that a kayak has an
integral skeg doesn't make it an unsafe kayak, as all kayaks have differing
dynamics.

>we make, sell and give skegged customers skeg tools. they're thrift store
table knifes ground into a hook, similar to a climber's nut tool. These
work well at cleaning the skeg box of grit. The mechanics that run the skeg
are other story. I'm not a huge fan of the bungie system and the wire
system is a t better. I'm actually working on a new system that is pretty
fun and challenging. we'll see.<

Okay "Tinker Belle," we know you are always tinkering and messing around in
boats, but I was wondering if you have had a chance to see the new CD
Gulfstream. It has a nice skeg system that the designers took some time to
tweek. Any comments?

Haven't seen a new system by CD, tho their old system works quite well. The
only problem I have with CD's skeg is the PITA it is to replace the cable.
It's a grinder and rivit gun and at least an hour. I have done a VCP wire
skeg in 10 minutes, in the field.

Gotta agree with you about the intregal skegs. in over 25 knots they can be
a real challenge, tho most folks are "onshore" _at_ 25+ knots! =:-o)

What about the Kajak Sport skeg? I recently paddled a Millennium and
was really impressed with the skeg system.

Yep, the KS skeg system is a great system. they need to be replaced skeg
and wire as they're bonded together, tho. not a happy time in the field.
In my experiences the KS hasn't failed in the field, so maybe a moot point.
Eddyline, P&H and others use the KS skeg system for their own designs, as
well.

Their new rudder system looks very innovative as well. They seem to be
proving to be a great company.

Donīt know how the system looks now, but Iīm the owner of an Artisan 2000,
the Boat before the Artisan Millenium and his Skeg system is on the outer
side okay. Makrolon Skeg, could be a little bit bigger, but never got
problems with it.
BUT inside, you have to treat the wire-system where the cable get out from
the skeg box and into the cable tube, very carefully. They glued a long and
non stabilized "sausage" without any resin-connection to the deck or the
sides. you have to stow all the stuff carefully around this sausage.
Otherweise you may break these thin resin-piece and it may cause leaking. In
my Sirius itīs much better.
Okay, a connection from the skeg box to the deck, i.e., may be a problem
with pressure n the deck. Best way should had been, to avoid this "sausage"
design and to integrate and glue it in a closed way to the skeg box.

I hope its better made on the newer boats.
